Offline Files is one of the less known features in Windows Vista, even though it was introduced with Windows 2000. Since then it has undergone many changes and improvements. The Windows Vista version is better than ever as it features several improvements such as the ability to force the transition to offline & online modes. Also the synchronization process has been streamlined and it now transfers only the blocks which were modified while offline, which translates into improved synchronization speed.

In this article I will talk again about Windows Speech Recognition and how you can enhance its functionality by using macros. I will show you how to create macros which do things such as: insert specific blocks of text, run programs with specific parameters and send keystrokes to any application. You will also learn how to create aliases for existing Windows Speech Recognition commands which are are hard to remember and replace them with more meaningful voice commands. At the end I will detail how to create macros which execute more advanced commands such as searching weather information for a given location.

Therefore, I will describe what services are, how they work and where to find the list of services installed in Windows Vista. At the end, I will show you how to change their status (start, stop, etc.), their type (automatic, manual, etc.) and give you my perspective regarding which services can be safely disabled in order to improve performance.

Many people, including myself, have been hassled by the fact that you cannot add any custom entries to the AutoPlay menu in Windows Vista. You can only choose from the applications that Windows Vista wants to give you access to. To solve this problem, some suggest using TweakUI, which was designed for Windows XP, and run it in compatibility mode. Unfortunately this solution doesn't work, especially on Windows Vista 64bit. After a lot of research and testing I managed to find a rather unknown application which works both on the 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows Vista and gets the job done very easily. Recycle Bin is one of the things that were redesigned in Windows Vista. It no longer has separate tabs for each partition. There is only one tab and you need to scroll up or down through your partitions list in order to make the changes you want. Also, you can no longer make “global settings” that apply to all your partitions.
This is why we decided to create this short tutorial and show our users how to configure the “new” Recycle Bin.
