When I went to defragment my windows vista hard drive, I opened the disk defragmenter and started it, but i looked in “my computer” and it was taking up even more space on the drive. What is wrong?

I am currently using Windows Vista Backup utility to back up my files on a separate partition on my Hard disk. My entire profile is less than 7GB, but free space on the backup partition 20GB keeps getting smaller and smaller. How do I ensure that this does not happen and still have an effective backup scheme?

Like my laptop is originaly windows xp but i upgraded to vista. I want to wipe my hard drive. Will it delete my vista and send me back to xp?
